Man Cleared of Oiling Street for Fatal Crash
NEW YORK — A 59-year-old insurance salesman has been cleared of charges that he caused a fatal accident by oiling a street to stop local drag-racers.
A state Supreme Court jury acquitted Andrew Romano of Queens of second-degree manslaughter and reckless endangerment in the death of Kenneth Miret, 20, of Queens. Miret was killed when his car spun out and crashed as he reportedly was speeding on Nov. 3, 1987.
It was alleged that Miret’s car had skidded on motor oil that Romano had spread on the street after neighbors repeatedly complained about drag-racing. On the witness stand, Romano denied pouring oil onto the street.
