Liberalism, Reaganism and the Presidential Campaign

I really must strongly disagree with Waxman. Though, what he says about liberalism may be true, what he says about Reaganism is not. Reaganism, a term which I presume he means to be conservatism thwarted by liberals in Congress, is not stagnant and uncompassionate. Reaganism is not that the government should do nothing to make the lives of people better. Rather, it’s that state and local governments should be doing the job.

Reaganism means that problems in Los Angeles, New York, or Chicago are much better served by the elected representatives in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago. Obviously Waxman doesn’t like Reaganism because it puts the power of government more directly into the hands of the people, not greedy, power-hungry congressmen (one of whom I’m sure Waxman would deny being).

So by cutting federal taxes, and massive, ineffectual, and wasteful federal programs, Reaganism would allow local and state governments to meet the needs of the people of their communities and states. Why send Los Angeles income to Washington, D.C., so it can be sent to New York, Philadelphia, etc., when it could be much better spent solving the problems in Los Angeles?
