Speaking Out on Orange County Elections : Candidates’ Affinity for North Criticized
As a voting Republican since 1960, I am dismayed about three candidates of my own party for Congress actively seeking the endorsement of Lt. Col. Oliver L. North (Ret.). Both Christopher Cox and Dana Rohrabacher heavily use North’s name in their campaign literature; Rep. Robert K. Dornan, as reported in The Times, went to a reception for him rather than appear with his Democratic opponent on Channel 50.
Such slavish homage to a person who admittedly has lied to Congress and is charged with breaking its laws during the Iran-Contra operation contradicts what the Congress stands for in our constitutional system. How can these candidates promise independent, informed judgment as representatives of the people and yet countenance one whose actions directly contradict these principles?
