Long Beach : Clinic Tries to Cut Costs
The Children’s Clinic of Long Beach, a nonprofit medical facility that treats children from low-income families, has decided to cut costs by turning its operations over to Memorial Medical Center. The change, effective Sept. 1, is expected to result in layoffs of about 20% of the clinic’s staff.
Under the new arrangement, the clinic--in the hospital basement--will retain its independence but pay Memorial a fee to oversee its operation, said Frank Yogus, president of the clinic’s board of directors.
For some time, costs at the 60-year-old clinic have outpaced income.
