Former Compton City Manager Laverta Montgomery filed a $1-million suit in Los Angeles federal court against City Council members Robert Adams, Floyd James and Maxcy Filer, claiming that she was fired on a 3-2 council vote after she turned down a marriage proposal by Adams. Montgomery was discharged last October for what Mayor Walter Tucker called “a pattern of willful and intentional failure to carry out the policy decisions of the City Council.” She contended in her suit that Adams proposed in July of last year, then told her in September that if she did not quit voluntarily, he would see that she was dismissed.
