Chula Vista
Eight brush fires began in a three-hour period in the Telegraph Canyon Road area of Chula Vista and on state land near Otay Lakes on Wednesday, and all are believed to have been set.
Arson was the probable cause of the blazes, which consumed about 74 acres between 1 and 4 p.m., officials said.
In Chula Vista, five fires broke out in an area bounded by Telegraph Canyon Road, Otay Lakes Road and Interstate 805, said Terry Koeper, arson investigator for the Chula Vista Fire Department.
During the same time period, the California Department of Forestry battled three fires that consumed 44 acres of brush in the Otay Lakes region, said Chris Hess, fire captain for the CDF.
