El Segundo : Model-Car Racing Debated
Angry residents turned out in force this week to debate an unusual issue before the El Segundo City Council: model car racing.
Armed with photos, diagrams and a petition with more than 150 signatures, residents from the Washington Street area told the City Council that a model-car race track near their property has produced noise, dust and parking problems. They criticized the council for permitting the Racers Club, made up mainly of teen-agers and their families, to use the track twice a month on weekends without getting prior approval from neighbors.
Model-car enthusiasts told the council that complaints of noise and crowds are exaggerated. They said they go out of their way not to cause problems.
Mayor Pro Tem Keith Schuldt told city staff to study the issue and decide whether the track should remain at Washington Street and Sycamore Avenue.
