The Board of Supervisors Tuesday chose Fluor Daniel to coordinate the preliminary design of the controversial new jail.

The Irvine-based company will work with other contractors on preliminary jobs, such as site plans and architectural designs. The preliminary work, scheduled to be completed next summer, will cost about $9 million.

The Times incorrectly reported Wednesday that Supervisor Don R. Roth opposed the selection of Fluor Daniel as the construction management company to design the county’s new jail in Gypsum and Coal canyons. Roth voted for the selection.

Supervisor Harriett M. Wieder abstained from the vote, citing the county’s “tin cup” law that bars supervisors from taking actions that would affect their major contributors. Wieder has received contributions from the Fluor Corp., the parent company of Fluor Daniel, an aide said.

Supervisor Don R. Roth voted against the idea, saying that he was trying to be consistent with his earlier opposition to the proposed site, which is next to his hometown of Anaheim.

The jail is expected to cost $600 million and house more than 6,000 inmates. On July 15, the supervisors voted to build the jail near Yorba Linda in Gypsum and Coal canyons.
