President Reagan’s nomination of Robert H. Bork to the Supreme Court has touched off a fierce political debate because of some of Bork’s views on civil rights, abortion and other issues. The climate of American public opinion, however, favors a more conservative rather than liberal orientation in the court’s future direction, the Gallup Poll found. In the survey, 41% said they would like to see the court’s decisions move in a more conservative direction while 32% would prefer more liberal rulings; 16% think the present direction is about right and 11% do not express opinions. Gallup surveys in the 1960s and 1970s made similar findings.
