Restaurants in unincorporated areas of the county were ordered this week to establish no-smoking areas, but owners will be allowed to decide how much space to set aside.

The law, which won final, unanimous approval from the Board of Supervisors, assigns the county Health Department primary responsibility for enforcement. Sheriff’s deputies could also be called in if the situation merited, Chief Administrative Officer Richard B. Dixon said.

“It seems to be a reasonable approach to protect people who don’t smoke from side smoke, and still allow people who smoke to go to public places,” Supervisor Ed Edelman said.
