Democrats Face Runoff in Miss. Governor Race

JACKSON, Miss. — State Auditor Ray Mabus and millionaire planter Mike Sturdivant today won the top positions in the Democratic gubernatorial primary and will meet in an Aug. 25 runoff.
With 90.8% of the votes counted, Mabus had 266,167 votes to 109,580 for Sturdivant. Slow vote-counting meant the race was not decided until this morning. In the Republican primary, only the second this century, businessman Jack Reed easily defeated financial consultant Doug Lemon.
