3 Sentenced in Phila. Extortion
PHILADELPHIA — Reputed organized crime boss Nicodemo (Little Nicky) Scarfo, a former city councilman and his top aide were given stiff sentences today for an extortion plot that a judge said “attempted to make city government a branch of the mob.”
U.S. District Judge John P. Fullam surprised even the prosecutors when he sentenced ex-Councilman Leland Beloff to 10 years in federal prison, aide Robert Rego to 8 and Scarfo, reputed Philadelphia-Atlantic City mob kingpin, to 14. The judge also fined Beloff and Scarfo $150,000 each and unleashed a scathing attack on Beloff, who was convicted of plotting with Rego and Scarfo in an attempt to extort $1 million from a developer.
