The Region : UCLA Seismic Safety Plan

UCLA will spend at least $110 million to $150 million over the next eight years to improve the seismic safety of campus buildings, Chancellor Charles E. Young announced. Thirty-seven structures--one-third of all campus buildings--will be strengthened to withstand a strong temblor. Among the buildings targeted for extensive work are Powell Library, the four undergraduate residence halls and the Ackerman Student Union. The state is expected to provide $75 million to $100 million of the money, with the rest to come from increased student fees. A widely publicized 1985 report said an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 or more on the Richter scale would kill 1,500 to 2,000 people on the campus if it struck during a normal weekday.
