SUMMER ARTS SCHOOL STUDENTS SELECTED

Twenty-one Orange County high school students are among 400 selected to attend the new California State Summer School for the Arts opening July 6 in Valencia, program officials announced Wednesday.

William Flynn, director of the state-run program, said the Orange County contingent is second in size only to the 85 students from Los Angeles County who will be attending the all-arts course through Aug. 2 on the California Institute of the Arts campus.

The Orange County students who were accepted for the first summer program are:

--In the creative writing category, Tait Christensen, Costa Mesa; Shane Cooper, Placentia; Douglas Keipp, Huntington Beach, and Jennifer Tull, Anaheim.

--In the instrumental music category, Audrey Haworth, Laguna Beach, and Christopher Magnusen, Irvine.

--In the vocal musical studies category, Bethany Blacketer, Laguna Beach; Rory Collins, Los Alamitos; Patricia Francisco, El Toro, and Chantal Lamourelle, Mission Viejo.

--In theater arts, Denise Horvat, Placentia, and Cheryl Huggins, Corona del Mar.

--In visual arts, Jennifer Bacon, Irvine; Jeffrey Blackburn, Cypress; Mark Boothe, Laguna Beach; David Christie, Huntington Beach; Erick Hanson, Santa Ana; Mathew Jones, Huntington Beach; Amy Knowles, Anaheim; Jonathan Lain, Santa Ana, and Sarah Lee, Orange.

Although the program is sponsored by the state, students pay $750 each, which includes room and board.

Flynn said more than 570 applications were received for the new summer school program. Classes in film and video also will be offered, but Flynn said there were no Orange County students among the finalists being considered.
