Times’ Martinez Named One of Top U. S. Columnists
Los Angeles Times columnist Al Martinez has been named one of the top three essay columnists in America by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists.
Martinez, whose columns appear in both the San Fernando Valley and Westside sections of The Times, placed second in balloting by the organization, whose members come from 40 states.
More than 200 columnists from throughout the United States competed in the 3-year-old contest.
First place went to Erik Lacitis of the Seattle Times and third place to Jill Porter of the Philadelphia News.
Martinez accepted his award at a national convention of the society in Phoenix.
His column has appeared in The Times for three years and is syndicated nationally by the Times-Post News Service.
