Gardena : Departments Consolidated

In a move expected to save $70,000 annually, the City Council has unanimously approved consolidation of the city’s Human Services and Recreation departments.

The move will not threaten any jobs or programs, according to city officials. The savings will come through elimination of the director’s position in the Human Services Department. It has been vacant since summer when Frank Benest resigned to become city manager in Colton.

Several residents spoke against the reorganization, saying it lessens the autonomy of the Human Services Department. However, council members Tuesday night emphasized that they will review the consolidation in six months to determine its effectiveness.

“If after six months it isn’t working, we’ll certainly go back” to two separate departments, said Councilman Mas Fukai. “But I believe this will provide better services.”
