Cerritos : New Park Commissioners

The City Council has appointed the first four members to its newly formed Parks and Recreation Commission. Several months ago, the council decided to create a commission to oversee development and maintenance of the city’s 21 parks as well as recreation programming for Cerritos’ 55,000 residents.

Each council member selected one person for the commission.

Councilman Barry A. Rabbitt chose Pam Bean, a 15-year resident who has served on the city’s Property Maintenance Appeals Board. Councilwoman Diana Needham selected Sandy Westbrook, a 14-year resident who managed Needham’s successful reelection in April and has a background in community theater. Council member Dan Wong chose Royal Lord, an elementary school principal who has coached youth sports teams for 18 years. Ann Joynt, the newest council member, picked Marianne Hughlett, a 13-year resident who is president of the local Bobby Sox girl’s softball league and a Norwalk high school teacher.

Mayor Don Knabe, the fifth member of the council, will announce his selection at the council’s June 19 meeting.

Besides parks, the commission is also responsible for the city-run nine-hole golf course, the Olympic swim center on 166th Street and Cerritos Regional County Park on Bloomfield Avenue.
