Culver City : Ship’s Decision Delayed

The Redevelopment Agency voted Monday to postpone until May 5 a decision concerning the condemnation of the property occupied by Ship’s restaurant.

The agency is considering acquiring the site, at 10705 Washington Blvd., to widen Overland Avenue.

During the public hearing on the proposed acquisition, architect and historian Alan Hess argued that the restaurant should not be destroyed because it qualifies as a historical landmark representing popular roadside architecture of the 1950s. Ruthann Lehrer, executive director of the Los Angeles Conservancy, said the building is also a cultural landmark because of its continued popularity in the community.

The matter was postponed for more study by the redevelopment agency staff, and to allow the owners of the restaurant and property to review the staff’s most recent report on the subject.
