Slain Student Called ‘Vibrant,’ ‘Caring’
Nearly 300 mourners filled a San Juan Capistrano church Wednesday to hear students and college officials eulogize Robbin Brandley, the Saddleback College student from Laguna Beach who was slain in a campus parking lot last weekend.
“She was a vibrant, energetic, caring person whose concern for and love of other students was the foundation of her existence,” said Vern Hodge, dean of student development at the Mission Viejo campus, where Miss Brandley was a Student Council member and disc jockey for the college radio station.
Several students wept as they shared their remembrances of her during the services in Rancho Capistrano Community Church. “She established her own values and goals; she didn’t get them from a book,” said student body president Ann Mineo. “She cared about her reputation as a professional. Her ethics were so important to her, and I respect that so much.”
Miss Brandley’s mother, Genelle Reilley, arranged to have copies of Dr. Gerald G. Jamposlky’s book, “Teach Only Love,” handed out to everyone attending the service. She said that “unconditional love is the answer . . . and is not being taught in the schools. Please send love to the person who killed Robbin so that they may not do that again.”
Miss Brandley, 23, was stabbed to death Saturday night shortly after she left a jazz concert and reception held at the Saddleback campus. The Sheriff’s Department is investigating the case but still has no significant leads, Lt. Dick Olson said.
