Henri Toivonen of Finland, driving a Lancia, won the 9.1-kilometer (5.65-mile) second-timed special stage to take the early lead in the 54th Monte Carlo auto rally.

Toivonen led a Peugeot 205 driven by Juha Kankkunen, also of Finland, by three seconds, and Italian teammate Massimo Biasion’s Lancia by four seconds.
