University of California political scientist Gayle Binion has been named to succeed Ramona Ripston, the longtime head of the Southern California chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. Binion, 39, an associate professor at UC Santa Barbara who is chairwoman of the political science department’s law and society programs, will become the new executive director for the rights group after a formal announcement Jan. 31, ACLU spokeswoman Rosa Martinez said.
