Mayor Dianne Feinstein has received a tentative offer of help in what she called “the toughest thing I’ve ever worked on”--keeping the baseball Giants from abandoning San Francisco. Wilfred Ussery, president of the BART board of directors, made a tentative offer of up to $4 million to help build a new baseball stadium at Rincon Hill. The proposal is based on “very preliminary” estimates of the number of additional riders BART would carry to and from the stadium. The Rincon Hill site is within walking distance of BART’s Embarcadero station. Feinstein said she would prefer a site in the China Basin, because it would cost the city $20 million less than the Rincon Hill site.
