Baseball notes: Mets get Yoenis Cespedes in trade with Tigers

Eagerly chasing offense as the clock ticked down on Friday’s trade deadline, the New York Mets landed the big right-handed bat they were seeking, acquiring Yoenis Cespedes from Detroit for two minor league pitchers.

Cespedes hit .293 with 18 home runs and 61 RBIs in 102 games for the Tigers. The outfielder, who can become a free agent after this season, joins his fourth team in a year and a day and represents a major boost to a weak lineup that threatened to derail New York’s postseason hopes. New York sent right-handers Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa to the suddenly rebuilding Tigers, who traded Cy Young Award winner David Price and closer Joakim Soria on Thursday.

Blue Jays acquireLowe and Revere

The Toronto Blue Jays capped a busy week with pair of trade deadline deals, adding reliever Mark Lowe from Seattle and outfielder Ben Revere from Philadelphia as they seek to end a 22-year playoff drought, longest in the majors.

Toronto shipped left-handers Nick Wells, Jacob Brentz and Rob Rasmussen to the Mariners for Lowe, a 32-year-old right-hander who is 0-1 with a 1.00 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 36 innings this season. Revere, obtained for two minor leaguers, hit .298 with 24 stolen bases and scored 49 runs as the Phillies’ leadoff man. He is expected to bat lower in the order as part of a left-field platoon for the Blue Jays, who earlier this week acquired slugger Troy Tulowitzki and Price.

Cubs get Haren

The Chicago Cubs acquired right-hander Dan Haren from the Miami Marlins, who will also send cash to cover part of his $11 million salary. Haren, 7-7 with a 3.42 ERA in 21 starts this season, joins his eighth team after previous stints with St. Louis, Oakland, Arizona, the Angels, Washington and the Dodgers, who traded him to Miami in December.

Orioles land Parra

The Baltimore Orioles filled a pressing need by obtaining left fielder Gerardo Parra from the Milwaukee Brewers for minor league right-hander Zach Davies. The team also dealt right-handed reliever Tommy Hunter to the Cubs for outfielder Junior Lake and designated struggling starter Bud Norris and first baseman Chris Parmelee for assignment. Parra, a leadoff hitter in Milwaukee, has a .328 average, nine homers and 53 runs this season.

Texas completed its deal to acquire Philadelphia ace Cole Hamels and left-handed reliever Jake Diekman for left-hander Matt Harrison and five prospects. The Rangers also will receive $9.5 million to offset part of the contract for Hamels, who is due $22.5 million per season through 2018. . . . A day after upgrading an already solid bullpen, Pittsburgh added rotation depth by acquiring left-hander J.A. Happ from Seattle for minor league pitcher Adrian Sampson. The Pirates also put struggling starter A.J. Burnett on the disabled list because of elbow inflammation. Happ was 4-6 with a 4.64 ERA for the Mariners. . . . St. Louis acquired former Dodgers reliever Jonathan Broxton and cash from Milwaukee for minor league outfielder Malik Collymore. Broxton is 1-2 with a 5.89 ERA. . . . Minnesota obtained help for a beleaguered bullpen, getting former Angels right-hander Kevin Jepsen from Tampa Bay for minor league pitching prospects Chih-Wei Hu and Alexis Tapia. . . . Oakland traded right-handed reliever Ryan Cook to Boston for a player to be named or cash, and acquired left-hander Felix Doubront from Toronto for cash. . . . Cleveland sent left-handed reliever Marc Rzepczynski to San Diego for outfielder Abraham Almonte.
