Julio UrĂas throws to hitters, on track to start Sunday in Philadelphia

CINCINNATI — Julio Urías’ return date from a hamstring strain is set.

After throwing two innings of live batting practice to hitters Tuesday afternoon, then two more innings in the bullpen, UrĂas is on track to start the Dodgers game Sunday in Philadelphia against the Phillies.

It would mark his first start in almost a month after going on the injured list with a left hamstring strain.

“We feel confident he’ll make his start on Sunday,” manager Dave Roberts said. “That’s a positive.”

Who UrĂas will replace in the Dodgers current rotation is unclear. Noah Syndergaard seems like the likeliest candidate, given his season-long struggles and 6.54 ERA. The club also has a pair of rookies currently starting games in Bobby Miller and Michael Grove.

“Once we get through this series and Julio comes back, we’ll try to figure out what we do,” Roberts said.

One option Roberts eliminated was using a six-man rotation, especially with the team having at least one off day for the next three weeks.

Nick Robertson called up

The Dodgers freshened up their bullpen Tuesday, calling up 24-year-old right-hander Nick Robertson for the first time in his career.

Reliever Tayler Scott was optioned in a corresponding move.

Dodgers’ bullpen is a statistical mess. Here’s what’s working and what isn’t

A shaky Sunday night game in which the Dodgers’ top three relievers gave up all four runs did not totally obscure the recent good deeds of their beleaguered bullpen, but it was hard to see that progress through the fog of a 4-1 loss to the New York Yankees.

“If you would have asked me a few days ago,” manager Dave Roberts said in response to a question about the overall performance of his bullpen, “I would have said fantastic.”

The numbers tell a different story. The Dodgers, who open a six-game trip to Cincinnati and Philadelphia with Tuesday night’s game against the Reds, entered Monday with a 4.64 bullpen earned-run average, which ranks 26th in the major leagues, a dramatic drop-off from the second-best 2.87 bullpen ERA of 2022.

Sunday recap: Great effort by Bobby Miller but another series loss for Dodgers

Ahead of the biggest game yet of his burgeoning major league career, Bobby Miller was a picture of poise in the Dodgers’ clubhouse on Sunday afternoon.

A few hours before taking the mound against the New York Yankees — on ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball” and in front of a sold-out crowd of 52,000, no less — the right-handed rookie relaxed, seemingly unfazed by the high-pressure stage he was about to take.

He cracked jokes with the teammates in front of his stall. He marveled at videos of Aaron Judge crashing through the bullpen wall the night before. And as Dave Roberts passed through the locker room, he greeted the manager with a cool, confident grin.
