Ahead of the biggest game yet of his burgeoning major league career, Bobby Miller was a picture of poise in the Dodgers’ clubhouse on Sunday afternoon.

A few hours before taking the mound against the New York Yankees — on ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball” and in front of a sold-out crowd of 52,000, no less — the right-handed rookie relaxed, seemingly unfazed by the high-pressure stage he was about to take.

He cracked jokes with the teammates in front of his stall. He marveled at videos of Aaron Judge crashing through the bullpen wall the night before. And as Dave Roberts passed through the locker room, he greeted the manager with a cool, confident grin.

The Dodgers and rookie right-hander Bobby Miller will have one less New York Yankees slugger to worry about in Sunday afternoon’s nationally televised game (ESPN) in Chavez Ravine.

Reigning American League most valuable player Aaron Judge is not in the Yankees lineup after injuring his right big toe in a violent collision with the right-field wall while making a spectacular catch in the eighth inning of New York’s 6-3 win on Saturday.

The 6-foot-7, 282-pound Judge, who is batting .291 with an AL-leading 19 homers and a major league-leading 1.078 on-base-plus-slugging percentage, raced into the corner to catch J.D. Martinez’s long drive and crashed into–and through–the chain-link gate that opens into the visiting bullpen.

“You know what? The training staff should have come out for the gate and not Judge,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts joked on Sunday. “What a heck of an athlete. What a heck of a play.

“I’ve never seen that here before. I’ve seen guys hit that particular fence and fall back and not give way. But when you’re 300 pounds, something’s got to give, and it wasn’t Judge.”

Another Dodgers prospect is set to make his MLB debut.

After outfielder Trayce Thompson strained his oblique on a check swing Saturday night, which will force him to go on the injured list, the team called up Jonny DeLuca on Sunday, making the 24-year-old the seventh rookie to join the big-league club this season.

A former 25th-round pick out of Oregon in 2019, the Thousand Oaks native wasn’t a high-profile name in the Dodgers’ farm system until this past winter, when the club added him to its 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.

DeLuca has validated that decision in the minors, batting a combined .292 at the double and triple A levels with 14 homers, 37 RBIs and a .953 OPS.

DeLuca was only recently promoted to triple-A Oklahoma City, playing his 17th game there Saturday night. However, with few other right-handed hitting outfielders at the upper levels of the organization, DeLuca got the nod to be Thompson’s short-term replacement.

The most important pitches thrown off the Dodger Stadium mound Saturday happened when the stands were empty, the gates closed.

Hours before the Dodgers’ 6-3 loss against the New York Yankees, injured left-hander Julio Urías completed his biggest step yet in his recovery from a hamstring strain. During a roughly 30-pitch bullpen session, the club’s opening day starter showed few limitations, using his entire pitch mix while building up to about 80% intensity.

“He was good today,” manager Dave Roberts said.
