David Mamet’s “Glengarry Glen Ross” off to strong start on Broadway

David Mamet’s political satire, “November,” may be getting mixed reviews in L.A, but his Broadway revival of “Glengarry Glen Ross” is raking it in in previews.
Starring Al Pacino and Bobby Cannavale, the play’s first four preview performances at New York’s Schoenfeld Theatre last week brought in $703,775, or a gross of about $176,000 for each performance, according to the trade association Broadway League.
One reason: Producers of the show have not been shy in pricing tickets. The best seats in the house have price tags up to $350.
“Glengarry Glen Ross,” about Chicago real estate agents, originally appeared at the Arts Institute of Chicago’s Goodman Theatre in February 1984; it moved to Broadway a month later, where it ran at the John Golden Theatre. The play won a Pulitzer Prize for drama that year.
Pacino also appeared in the 1992 film adaptation, which was directed by James Foley. He portrayed the flashy character Rick Roma in the film; he has the role of the older agent Shelley Levine in the Broadway revival. Cannavale plays Roma.
The LaJolla Playhouse’s well-received revival of “Glengarry Glen Ross” closed Sunday.
