Tyson Gay runs fastest 100 (9.77) of the year

Tyson Gay gave notice to world-record holder Usain Bolt by running the fastest 100 meters of the year in 9.77 seconds at the Golden Gala on Friday in Rome.

Gay swept past previous record-holder Asafa Powell 40 meters from the finish in a time that would have been good enough to equal the world record less than two years ago.

Powell finished second in 9.88, and fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake was third with 9.96.

Ducks add another defenseman

The Ducks signed free-agent defenseman Steve McCarthy to a one-year contract.

McCarthy, 28, spent last season with Ufa Salavat Yulayev of Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League, where he had no points and 16 penalty minutes in 18 games.

He last played in the NHL with Atlanta in 2007-08 and has 55 points and 168 penalty minutes in 302 games.

The Washington Capitals have found a possible second-line center for next season, signing free agent Brendan Morrison to a one-year, $1.5-million contract.

Canada, Costa Rica alive in Gold Cup

Canada tied Costa Rica, 2-2, in Miami and clinched the top spot in its group at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Costa Rica, which finished with a victory, loss and a draw, advanced to the knockout stage as group runner-up after Jamaica beat El Salvador, 1-0.

Iraq played its first home soccer game since 2002, defeating Palestine, 3-0, in an exhibition in front of a sellout crowd of about 25,000 at Fransou Hariri Stadium in Irbil.

Logano victorious in Nationwide race

Joey Logano won the Nationwide Series race at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill., for his third win of the season and continues to live up to his billing as one of NASCAR’s rising stars.

Logano passed Kyle Busch with 25 laps left, then held him off on old tires over the final 10 laps. The 19-year-old Logano, the youngest winner in Sprint Cup history, did not make a late pit stop to get fresh tires.

Tony George said he declined a request to remain chief executive of the Indy Racing League because he would have remained subordinate to the new leaders at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Croatia leads U.S. in Davis Cup, 2-0

Marin Cilic outlasted Mardy Fish in five sets to give Croatia a 2-0 lead over the United States after the opening singles of their Davis Cup quarterfinal in Porec, Croatia. Cilic beat Fish, 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-1, 8-6, in a match that lasted 4 hours 23 minutes and ended at 1 a.m. local time.

Much earlier, Ivo Karlovic pounded 47 aces and rallied from two sets down to beat James Blake, 6-7 (5), 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3), 7-5 on an indoor clay court.

Also in the Davis Cup, Juan Martin del Potro outclassed Ivo Minar, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3, and Argentina drew even with the Czech Republic. In the first match, Tomas Berdych overcame Juan Monaco, 6-4, 2-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, on the indoor hard court at CEZ Arena in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Fourth-seeded Agnes Szavay beat qualifier Timea Bacsinszky, 6-2, 6-3, to reach the semifinals of the Budapest Grand Prix in Hungary. Szavay will face sixth-seeded Alona Bondarenko. . . . Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki beat Flavia Pennetta, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, to reach the Swedish Open final for the first time in Bastad. Wozniacki will play unseeded Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in today’s final.

Chargers’ Brinkley stable after shooting

San Diego Chargers rookie running back Curtis Brinkley was hospitalized in stable condition after being shot at a suburban Philadelphia intersection, authorities said.

Brinkley, 23, was shot multiple times early Friday as his car was stopped at an intersection in Cheltenham, Pa., police said. Investigators are looking for a gunman who fled the scene in a car. They did not have a motive.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth was released from a Miami jail after serving 24 days for DUI manslaughter.

Quarter horse owner and breeder Spencer Childers, who was a fixture at Los Alamitos for more than 60 years, died Thursday at 98.
