QUICK TAKES - July 7, 2009
It’s here: this year’s edition of the ARTnews list of the world’s 200 top collectors -- a ranking that lots of art-world folks love to hate and debate. And yes, the roster of acquisitors from 22 countries includes collectors from Los Angeles -- six who claim the L.A. area as their primary residence and three who have secondary homes here.
As usual, Edythe L. and Eli Broad are prominently featured. They rank third in the Top 10 list, bested only by Roman Abramovich of London and Moscow and Debra and Leon Black of New York. The other L.A. residents who made the cut are Maria and William Bell, Peter Norton, Judy and Michael Ovitz, Eric Smidt and Dean Valentine. Those who are based elsewhere but also have homes in L.A. are Eugenio Lopez Alonso of Mexico City, Susan and Larry Marx of Aspen, Colo., and Beth Swofford of New York.
