Fish is a favorite

This is a good town for fish lovers. We are blessed with many fish specialists, in a wide price range.

Fish Grill

This popular San Fernando Valley eatery is known for its affordable prices and kid-friendly atmosphere. (It’s also kosher.) Choose from a variety of fish, either grilled or deep fried. We like the satisfying grilled red snapper sandwich, slathered with tartar sauce. Like most of the entrees, it comes with a choice of two sides. Note: The restaurant closes for the Sabbath.

La Serenata de Garibaldi

Arguably Los Angeles’ most celebrated Mexican eatery, this Boyle Heights institution does wonderful things with fish. We can’t resist the mojo de ajo sauce, a fragrant garlic recipe that’ll have garlic seeping out of your pores for days. Have it over halibut, sea bass or mahi-mahi. And to drink? Fresh cantaloupe juice.

I Cugini

Seafood with an Italian flair is the specialty of the house. Think whole branzino roasted in rock salt, for example, and brodetto, a lusty cioppino-like meal in a bowl. On Sunday mornings, to go along with the massive buffet brunch, there’s live jazz broadcast by the Wave radio station.

Delmonico’s Seafood Grille

This brasserie-style spot on the edge of Beverly Hills is done up in lots of mahogany and brass and features a beautiful bar. Industry types favor the private booths and the zuppa alla pescatore, a big bowl of lobster, shrimp, clams, scallops (the list goes on) in a tomato saffron broth.

McCormick & Schmick’s

Situated in the heart of downtown L.A., M & S features a patio, an expansive bar area and one of the most popular happy hours. The main lure: $1.95 burgers and a slew of singles. On the regular menu, we’re partial to the cedar plank roasted salmon. On Aug. 12, in honor of its 13th birthday, the restaurant is serving 1 1/2 -pound lobsters for $13.95. But come early; last year was sold out.
