Summerly Is in Season With Bailey Aboard
In two pairings with jockey Jerry Bailey, Summerly has not come close to defeat.
With the Hall of Fame rider aboard for the first time in the Fair Grounds Oaks on March 12, the 3-year-old daughter of Summer Squall won the Grade II by 4 3/4 lengths as the 1-2 favorite.
After a one-race absence, Bailey was back for the Kentucky Oaks, a Grade I, on May 6 and Summerly upset Sis City, winning by two lengths at odds of 9-2.
Owner Ronald Winchell and trainer Steve Asmussen hope Bailey and Summerly are still perfect together after today’s $300,000 Mother Goose at Belmont Park.
This will be the first start in New York for the $410,000 yearling purchase since she made her debut Aug. 1 at Saratoga. She finished eighth of nine that day, beaten by more than 28 lengths.
Victorious at three tracks in winning five of eight and earning $709,763, Summerly will break from the outside in the 1 1/8 -mile race against Seeking The Ante, Smuggler, Spun Sugar, Winning Season and Lady Pegasus.
Race of the day: Battle Won, who finished third behind Champali and Beau’s Town in the same race a year ago, is back for another try in the Aristides Handicap, a Grade III at six furlongs, at Churchill Downs. Mike Smith will ride the 5-year-old Honour And Glory gelding, who has won seven of 16, for owners Jay and Gretchen Manoogian and trainer Chuck Simon.
Kelly’s Landing, Jet Prospector, Level Playingfield, Gators N Bears and Bwana Charlie are also scheduled to run.
One for the road: Salic Law looks like the controlling speed as he seeks his second consecutive win on turf in the seventh at Belmont. Javier Castellano will ride the 4-year-old Deputy Commander colt for trainer Tom Albertani in the $60,000 handicap at 1 3/8 miles. Salic Law won by nearly four lengths in going 1 1/4 miles in his first start on the Belmont grass on May 27.
Exotically speaking: A pick three using Cat Of Fifty Seven in the fourth, Honor Spirit, Shirleys Honor and Devons Success in the fifth and Smokegetenyoureyes, K’ehleyr and Celestial Star in the sixth.
Winners (through Thursday): Previous day/meet total: 4/109. Money: Previous day/meet total: $24.60/$555.50. Total money bet: $792.
