Tenors may reteam for World Cup
“The Three Tenors” could join up again to mark the 2006 Football World Cup in Germany, 16 years after they brought opera to the masses with their first concert at the Terme di Caracalla in Rome.
Placido Domingo, at a news conference Friday to mark his return to the famous Roman venue, said he, Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carreras could sing together again.
“We have difficulty finding a time when we can all be together.... But it’s always been linked to football -- 2006 has been mentioned, so let’s see,” the maestro told a room packed with journalists close to Rome’s Piazza Campidoglio.
Opera and football first teamed up in the “Three Tenors” concert on the eve of the 1990 World Cup final at the Terme di Caracalla, the ruins of the public baths of ancient Rome.
The three tenors have since sung around the world, but it was thought they might never perform together again because Pavarotti has said he wants to retire.
