Devil Rays Take Series in New York

Jorge Cantu hit two two-run homers, and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays won their first series at Yankee Stadium in more than five years with a 9-4 victory over New York on Thursday night.

Damon Hollins added a three-run double, and Tampa Bay took three of four from the Yankees and improved to 1-10-1 in road series. The Devil Rays are 8-29 on the road, but half of those victories have been at Yankee Stadium, where they are 4-2. They do not have a winning record in any other ballpark, including their own, where they are 18-18.

The Devil Rays last won a series in New York from Sept. 24 to 27, 1999, and are 2-16-3 in series there.

The Yankees dropped to 3-7 overall against the Devil Rays, with an effort that sharply contrasted with Manager Joe Torre’s pregame hope for a “grind it out” victory.

Oakland 5, Seattle 0 -- Kirk Saarloos (4-4) pitched a four-hitter at Seattle for the second shutout of his career. Saarloos tied his personal best with seven strikeouts and walked none.

Scott Hatteberg had four hits for the eighth time in his career, and Oakland had 16 hits.

Minnesota 6, Detroit 2 -- Carlos Silva pitched his second complete game, working around nine hits and spurring the host Twins out of their slump.

The Twins took advantage of Jason Johnson’s bases-loaded wild pitch in the first and ended a four-game losing streak.

Matthew LeCroy homered and drove in three runs, and Minnesota won for only the fourth time in 13 games.

Toronto 6, Baltimore 2 -- Roy Halladay beat Baltimore for the first time this season, leading the Blue Jays at Toronto.

Halladay (11-4) began the game 0-2 with a 7.43 earned-run average in two outings against the Orioles. But the 2003 AL Cy Young Award winner looked better against them this time, giving up two runs and seven hits in eight innings.
