Billionaire Donates Research Center Funds
UC Berkeley has received a $40-million gift from Hong Kong billionaire and philanthropist Li Ka-shing. The donation from the Li Ka Shing Foundation will be used to establish a research center focused on new scientific fields including stem cell biology and brain imaging, campus officials said Thursday.
Completion of the biomedical and health sciences center is expected in 2009.
Li, Hong Kong’s richest man, is ranked No. 22 on Forbes’ list of richest people in 2005; he controls the conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa Ltd.
