Taliban to Put Abducted Policemen on ‘Trial’
Taliban rebels ambushed a police convoy in southern Afghanistan, taking at least 10 officers and a district police chief captive, officials said. But the militia said it was holding 30 captives and planned to put them on trial for supporting the U.S.-backed government.
The police convoy was attacked Thursday en route from Kandahar to Miana Shien, about 60 miles to the northeast, said Gen. Salim Khan, the deputy provincial police chief.
Taliban commander Mullah Rahim, who led the attacks, told Reuters news agency that no captives had been killed and religious leaders would decide their fates. “We will put them on trial,” he said. “We won’t kill anyone until the mullahs issue a fatwa.”
