Prime Minister Departs for U.S. on Historic Visit
Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai departed on a groundbreaking visit to the United States, seeking closer ties with Washington and support for his country’s bid to join the World Trade Organization.
Khai’s visit to the U.S. is the first by a Vietnamese prime minister since the Vietnam War ended 30 years ago. In an interview last week, he said his trip would symbolize that the two countries had put resentments over the war “behind us.”
Khai will visit Seattle on Monday and meet with President Bush on Tuesday. He then will visit New York and Boston.
