College 101: Picking the Right One

Susan Baskin’s essay (“The New College Try,” May 8) sounded exactly like the experience my ex-wife and I had when we looked for the best college for our bright and highly motivated daughter. The college we chose, while very highly ranked and regarded, was an educational disappointment. As a public university professor for almost 40 years, I’d urge parents to consider less expensive public universities, where the quality of the education is high and instructors are dedicated to students. We didn’t find our highly ranked college to model either attribute.
