A reputed Irish Republican Army veteran was arraigned on a murder charge in the killing of a Catholic man that has overshadowed Northern Ireland’s peace process and fueled an exceptional public campaign by the victim’s five sisters.

Terence “Jock” Davison, 49, offered no plea as prosecutors accused him of killing Robert McCartney, who was stabbed and bludgeoned outside a Belfast pub Jan. 30. McCartney’s sisters have alleged that the IRA destroyed evidence and intimidated witnesses.
