Former Official Gets Jail Time for Embezzlement

A judge sentenced a former Mexico City mayor and tourism secretary to a 7 1/2 -year prison term for embezzling government funds, but appeals could keep him out of prison.
Oscar Espinosa Villarreal served as mayor from 1994 to 1998 and was tourism secretary under President Ernesto Zedillo.
He fled to Nicaragua and applied for asylum amid charges that he stole $45 million from city coffers.
He was extradited to Mexico in August 2001.
He also was ordered to pay more than $26 million in reparations.
