A Riverside County sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a Mead Valley man Wednesday after the man lunged at another deputy with a knife as they tried to serve him with eviction papers, authorities said.

The man, whose name is not being released until his family is notified, refused to cooperate, and two deputies were trying to take him into custody when the shooting occurred about 3:10 p.m. in the 21000 block of Markham Street, according to Sgt. Shelley Kennedy-Smith, a spokeswoman for the department.

One deputy, whose name was not released, shot the man more than once in the torso after the man lunged at one of them with a knife, authorities said. The man died at 4:43 p.m. at Riverside County Regional Medical Center.
