Illini Fall Victim to Iowa

Freshman Jeff Horner had 16 points and 11 rebounds as Iowa beat No. 8 Illinois, 68-61, Wednesday night at Iowa City, the Hawkeyes’ third victory over a ranked team in as many weeks.

Iowa (11-3, 3-0 Big Ten), a team with a short bench that was picked to finish near the bottom of the conference, beat Tulsa last month and then-No. 25 Michigan State on Saturday.

Brian Cook, the Big Ten’s leading scorer, had 20 points and 12 rebounds for Illinois (12-2, 2-1).

No. 1 Duke 104, Virginia 93 -- J.J. Redick scored a Duke freshman-record 34 points as the Blue Devils (12-0, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat the Cavaliers (10-4, 1-2) at Durham, N.C., to extend their home winning streak to 21 games.

Redick broke the mark of 31 set by Johnny Dawkins during the 1982-83 season.

Travis Watson led Virginia with 26 points.

No. 4 Texas 82, Baylor 71 -- Brandon Mouton had 18 points, seven in a 16-1 second-half run that put the Longhorns (11-2, 2-0 Big 12) ahead to stay at Waco, Texas. It was Texas’ sixth victory in a row. Terrance Thomas had 17 points for Baylor (9-4, 0-2).

No. 7 Florida 77, Tennessee 64 -- Matt Bonner had 25 points at Gainesville, Fla., as the Gators (14-2, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) won their 10th in a row. Florida also won its 13th straight at home. Ron Slay led Tennessee (8-4, 1-2) with 17 points.

No. 9 Alabama 68, No. 14 Mississippi State 62 -- Mo Williams made a three-pointer with 26 seconds left in overtime and Antoine Pettway added two free throws as the Crimson Tide (12-2, 2-1 SEC) beat the Bulldogs (10-4, 0-3) at Tuscaloosa, Ala. It was Mississippi State’s third straight loss.

Erwin Dudley had 23 points for Alabama, which extended the nation’s third-longest home winning streak to 28 games. Derrick Zimmerman led Mississippi State with 15 points.

No. 12 Kansas 98, Wyoming 70 -- Coach Roy Williams got his 400th victory as Nick Collison had 28 points at Lawrence, Kan., to lead the Jayhawks (12-3) past the Cowboys (12-3). Williams is 400-96 in 14 seasons at Kansas.

No. 13 Creighton 93, Evansville 56 -- Kyle Korver made a career-high nine three-pointers and had 31 points as the Blue Jays (14-1, 5-0 Missouri Valley) beat the Purple Aces (5-8, 1-3) at Omaha.

No. 19 Wake Forest 81, No. 17 Maryland 72 -- Josh Howard had 23 points at Winston-Salem, N.C., as the Demon Deacons (11-1, 1-1 ACC) ended their seven-game losing streak against the Terrapins (9-4, 2-1).

Steve Blake led Maryland with 15 points.

No. 18 Indiana 71, Northwestern 57 -- Tom Coverdale had 19 points and 10 assists at Bloomington, Ind., to lead the Hoosiers (12-3, 2-1 Big 10) to their 26th straight victory over the Wildcats (8-6, 0-3).

Indiana was without leading scorer Bracey Wright (back).

No. 23 Louisiana State 112, Centenary 65 -- Tony Gipson scored 14 points as the Tigers (12-2) stretched their home winning streak to 11 games in beating the Gents (7-10).

Mount St. Mary’s Coach Jim Phelan, 79, will retire after the season, ending a 49-year career in which he has won more than 800 games, according to the Associated Press.

No one has coached more college basketball games (1,339) over more seasons than Phelan, whose 824 career victories is the most among active coaches and fourth on the career list.
