New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter sat out Friday’s series opener against Toronto because of his injured leg but could play against the Blue Jays this weekend.

The five-time All-Star shortstop came out of Thursday’s game against the Cleveland Indians after he bruised his left lower leg and sprained his knee on a hard, takeout slide by the Indians’ John McDonald.

Roger Clemens was scratched from his scheduled Sunday start for the Yankees because of an injured right leg. Clemens left Tuesday’s win over Cleveland after 95 pitches because of cramping in his leg.

Chicago Cub right fielder Sammy Sosa missed Friday’s game against the Braves because of a family emergency. Sosa flew back to Chicago earlier in the day and isn’t expected to return to Atlanta for the final two games of the series. It was the first game Sosa had missed this season.... San Francisco Giant outfielder Marvin Benard will be sidelined for at least two months and could be lost for the season after surgery on his injured left knee uncovered far more cartilage damage than expected.
