Oak-Killing Pathogen May Prompt Restrictions

SACRAMENTO — Fear of the spread of a little-understood pathogen that is killing many of California’s prized oak trees has led authorities to consider quarantines, including federal restrictions on nursery shipments.
The restrictions could adversely affect growers, and it might not even stop the spread of “sudden oak death,” although it could slow it, officials said.
The state already has regulations in place, and they restrict the movement of plant materials from infected areas in 10 counties.
The proposed federal restrictions would regulate movement of plant material from those counties, including areas within them that aren’t affected.
