Airport Facilities
* It’s gratifying to see The Times reporting on the burgeoning opposition to the LAX expansion plan (“El Toro Controversy Invades L.A. County,” April 9). The link to development of a reasonably sized El Toro airport, which will help to more fairly share the burden, is a key point in the debate. The neighbors of LAX, already carrying an unfair share of the overall Southern California air transport burden, need to continue to oppose the NIMBY voices in Orange County, who prefer that all noise, pollution and traffic impacts continue to fall entirely upon us.

Re “Air Freight Transport,” letter, April 8: Peter Papineau calls for an airport dedicated to air cargo to be constructed “in a low-density population area, but close enough to highways and railroads.” Mojave Airport can handle any cargo aircraft flying, has a rail spur connected to the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad main lines, is on two major highways, is 90 miles by the 14 Freeway from the Los Angeles region and has a trained work force.
