LAGUNA BEACH
Steve Kawaratani, known as the “Plant Man” to locals, will share his love, experience and knowledge of horticulture with the city’s 10 gardeners during five training sessions beginning Thursday.
During the two-hour classes, Kawaratani, who was born and reared in Laguna Beach, will review with the students pruning, gardening maintenance, pest and disease management, soils, fertilizers, mulches and plant selection.
Terry Brandt, director of municipal services, said he contracted with 49-year-old Kawaratani because of his hands-on experience and knowledge of the community.
Brant wanted to enhance the types of training used for the city’s gardening staff, which generally is only trained while they’re working. The classes will cost Laguna Beach $750, he said.
“Ultimately, we’ll end up with a more beautiful city,” Brandt said. “I’m a firm believer in education. Everyone needs refresher courses once in a while.”
