Three Region Players Are Placed on 40-Man Rosters
Infielder Jack Wilson and pitchers Josh Towers and Will Ohman have been placed on the 40-man rosters of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Baltimore Orioles and Chicago Cubs, respectively.
Wilson, a shortstop from Thousand Oaks High and Oxnard College, last season batted a combined .282 for Arkansas and Altoona, both double-A clubs. The St. Louis Cardinals traded Wilson in July.
Towers, from Hueneme High and Oxnard College, was 8-6 with a 3.47 earned-run average at triple-A Rochester. In 148 innings, he struck out 102 batters and walked 21.
Ohman, formerly of Pepperdine, made his major league debut in September. He was 5-4 with a 1.93 ERA at double-A West Tennessee. He is expected to compete for a relief spot with the Cubs.
* Outfielder Brent Cookson (Santa Paula, Ventura College) signed a minor league contract with the Dodgers and infielder David Lamb (Newbury Park) signed a minor league deal with the Angels.
Also signing minor league contracts were Bryan Corey (Thousand Oaks, Pierce College) and Steve Soliz (Rio Mesa).
Corey, a right-handed reliever, signed with the San Diego Padres. He pitched briefly in the majors with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Soliz re-signed with the Padres. He played last season at triple-A Las Vegas.
* Pitcher Tyler Johnson signed with Washington State and pitcher Jared Edroslan signed with UC Santa Barbara. Both played at Newbury Park and now play at Moorpark College.
FOOTBALL
* Running back Perry Clayton of Grant was selected offensive player of the year in the Sunset Six League.
Linebacker Bryant Barrientos of North Hollywood was selected defensive player of the year.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
* Tracey Milburn, a Moorpark High graduate and senior forward at UCLA, was named Pacific-10 player of the year.
Milburn led the Bruins in scoring with 29 points on 12 goals and five assists.
BASKETBALL
* A free youth clinic is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. today at Moorpark College.
