The Aug. 29 Opinion section hit the bull’s-eye with William Schneider’s article on the need for strong moral leadership. However, has the most reliable candidate to fill that need been overlooked here? Gary Bauer gets noticed by many others. “Fox News” has shown Bauer responds clearly and consistently to the issues at hand.
Here is a man who, over the years, has steadfastly taken the upright route, spent his time associating with reputable people and kept clean, even surrounded by dirty old Washington politics. In the opinion of this mom, Bauer has passed his trial. Therefore, no discussion or any ballot will be complete unless it presents Bauer for president.

In James P. Pinkerton’s Aug. 26 commentary, he describes fringe candidates who have used public financing for campaigning.
The states of Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts and Arizona have enacted “clean money/clean election” laws that offer individuals who qualify an opportunity to run for office if they accept no contributions from special-interest groups. If elected, they are beholden only to their constituents.
Do the citizens of those four states know something we haven’t heard about?
