Cal Lutheran Ends Chapman’s Winning Streak
Cal Lutheran ended Chapman’s 17-game winning streak Saturday, with a 6-2 victory over the Panthers in the UC San Diego Triton baseball tournament.
Chapman (35-3) led, 2-1, before Brad Smith hit a grand slam in the third inning for Cal Lutheran (27-10).
In a later game, Erik Maurer gave up one run in five innings to earn his ninth victory and lead Chapman to a 9-1 victory over Menlo.
In the Golden State Athletic Conference:
Southern California College 14-2, Concordia 9-3--Concordia (24-23-1, 16-14) scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth, but SCC (19-28, 10-20) scored four in the seventh, taking a 13-6 lead. Derek Patterson hit two home runs in the game for the Eagles.
In Game 2, Matt Broesamle had the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 10th to lead Concordia, which finished third in the conference.
In Big West Conference softball:
Utah State 5-2, Cal State Fullerton 2-0--Visiting Utah State took a 3-2 lead on a three-run home run by Emily Wilson-Platt in the sixth of the first game. Stephenie Little and Dara Marzolo had RBIs for the host Titans.
In nonconference softball:
Cal State Bakersfield 4-7, Chapman 2-3--The Division II Roadrunners (40-15) extended their winning streak to 10 with a sweep of visiting Chapman (28-8), ranked eighth in Division III.
