Birmingham’s Calderon Flies Past El Camino Real

Rudy Calderon won the 110-meter high hurdles and the 330-yard low hurdles, and also ran on the victorious mile relay team to lead Birmingham High to an 82-51 victory over El Camino Real in a Northwest Valley Conference track and field meet on Saturday at El Camino Real.

Calderon recorded times of 15.4 in the 110 high hurdles and 42.0 in the 330 low hurdles.

Deangelo Nedd of El Camino Real (3-2, 3-2) won the high jump (6-0), long jump (21-3) and triple jump (43-0).

SOFTBALL

Notre Dame 4, Mount Carmel 2--Karen Tobin scored the winning run by escaping a rundown on a missed squeeze attempt and the Knights won their second game of the day in the Rancho Buena Vista Tournament in San Diego.

Alyssa Mazur had three hits and tied the score, 2-2, with an RBI single in the third.

In the earlier game, Notre Dame defeated San Pasqual, 2-1. Marisa Meskew had two hits, scored a run and drove in the winning run in the third inning.

Sophomore Amanda De La Cerda (6-4) allowed three hits, struck out seven and did not walk a batter for Notre Dame (8-4).

Laguna Hills 4, Hart 0--Sara Dean had two hits, but the Indians (10-3-1) lost a Fountain Valley tournament consolation game at Mile Square Park.

In an earlier game, Hart defeated Sonora, 1-0, behind a two-hitter by Amanda Fortune, who struck out nine. Fortune scored on Kourtney Downen’s sacrifice fly.

Rio Mesa 8, Warren 6--Teresa Ayala and Kiara Cochran each had two hits and drove in two runs, and Sarah Barrera had three hits, including a double, and scored two runs for the Spartans (6-9) in an El Segundo tournament game.

Earlier, Rio Mesa dropped a 1-0 first-round decision to La Canada.

Hueneme 14-9, Santa Paula 3-4--Charity Harmeson had four hits in the first game, Christina Harmeson had five hits in the second game and the Vikings swept a nonleague doubleheader at Santa Paula.

Emily Otineru of Hueneme (9-5) homered in each game and hit two doubles.

Royal 1-0, La Reina 0-1--The Highlanders (11-9) won the first game when Jennifer Knasin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh.

The Regents (8-6) won the second game when an illegal pitch allowed Melissa Romero to score in the 10th inning.

Shortstop Monica Thompson of La Reina set a school record with 10 assists in the second game.

VOLLEYBALL

Viewpoint def. Pasadena Poly, 15-10, 15-0, 15-5--Dan Roy had 33 kills and the Patriots (7-2) won the Viewpoint tournament.
