A Poem for Refugees
Editor’s note: Four students in Melissa Eastman Wantz’s creative writing class at El Camino High School in Ventura collaborated on this poem in reaction to the article, “A Silence Settles Along Borders as Refugees Vanish,” and photo on the front page of the April 8 edition of The Times:
Blace Refugee Camp, Yugoslavia
April 8, 1999
Their empty tents, a trail of tears,
Twenty thousand people gone, vanished
In the night.
Families lost, freedom separated;
What are they thinking?
Baby strollers, blankets, suitcases:
Belongings deserted. Wedding rings
Stripped. Flooding out.
“And Cuba is so far.”
