David Matthew
Men’s tennis
Matthew, a sophomore, won his No. 4 singles set to clinch a 4-3 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Saturday.
Matthew rallied from a 5-3 deficit to win the tiebreaker. He is 8-3 in singles and has teamed with Thomas Bohun to go 11-2 in doubles.
THIS WEEK
Men’s volleyball: The Anteaters are ninth nationally, their highest ranking ever. Irvine, which has won nine of its last 11 matches, ends the regular season hosting Stanford at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Women’s tennis: Darian Chappel and Jonni Seymour are 12-7 as a doubles team. Seymour is 14-7 as a singles player. Irvine begins play in the Big West Championships Wednesday at Ojai.
Track and field: Mike Murray won the 1,500 meters in a career-best time of 3 minutes 55.79 seconds at the UC San Diego Collegiate Classic last Saturday. Irvine competes in the Pomona College Invitational Friday and in the Mt. San Antonio College Relays Friday through Sunday.
Men’s tennis: Andrew Cheney and Brett Lucas are 7-2 as a No. 3 doubles team. Irvine hosts Texas El Paso Monday at 2 p.m. and competes in the Big West Championships April 23-25 in Ojai.
